In the second quarter of Sunday night’s Super Bowl 56 broadcast, Coinbase took analog to an entirely different level.

The cryptocurrency company spent its 60 seconds – and estimated $13 million – on a QR bouncing from corner to corner of your TV screen (think of a screensaver on an overhead projector during a stultifying presentation). No humans, no product name, nothing to tip what we might be experiencing until the spots final seconds.

Naturally, the curious among us might have been compelled to stalk our TV screen – and those aren’t getting any smaller – to see where our phone’s QR scanner might take us. And that’s where the mystery is solved.

This has made the Shib community quite happy as well. But this has taken the interest away from the ad and people are talking about that glimpse of Shiba Inu only.

Coinbase, as it turned out, wasn’t the only crypto app to do well. Among the top five apps whose ads delivered strong download growth, three were crypto apps.

In addition to Coinbase, crypto trading platform eToro grew app installs by 132% week-over-week on February 13, and by 82% on February 14. installs grow by a collective 279% on February 13 compared to the week prior. This continued into the following day, when week-over-week download growth reached 252%.

The other apps in the top 5 on Super Bowl Sunday were sportsbooks. The DraftKings Sportsbook app saw downloads pop 197% week-over-week on Sunday, just behind Coinbase.

Viewers who scanned the code were redirected to a page for close to a $100 million giveaway. The ad spurred viewers to rush the Coinbase website, causing it to crash for a few minutes.

Chief Product Officer at Coinbase, Surojit Chatterjee, tweeted,

“Coinbase just saw more traffic than we’ve ever encountered, but our teams pulled together and only had to throttle traffic for a few minutes.

We are now back and ready for you at http://drops.coinbase.com.”

He also announced that the ad pulled in over 20 million hits on the landing page in one minute, with engagement that was six times higher than all previous benchmarks.

While download growth is one signal of the advertisement’s success, another is the app’s rank, which measures a combination of downloads, velocity and other factors.

In some cases, the brand’s Super Bowl ad prompted an immediate jump in terms of new installs, but not all ads benefited in the same way.

The ad also started trending on social media, especially starting several conversations on Twitter.

Celebrities Roped In For Crypto Ads

Unusual celebrity endorsements are another way that Super Bowl advertisements attempt to stand out. For example, another crypto exchange, FTX Trading, paired up with comedian-producer Larry David to fill their ad spot in the Super Bowl commercial break.

In the ad, David is portraying skeptical figures throughout historical moments. At one point, David scoffs at the invention of the light bulb and then at the moon landing.

Finally, he claims that crypto will not amount to anything, indicating the opposite.

Crypto.com also had a celebrity endorsement, having roped in basketball legend LeBron James.
