Basically, it’s a network that implements blockchain and provides a programming language developers can use to create and manage smart contracts.

Although Chia has been around since 2017 the frenzy for Chia just started in 2021. It was created by Bram Cohen who is most commonly known as the author of the popular P2P Filesharing service BitTorrent.

Farming Chia is unlike regular proof-of-work mining that other blockchains such as BTC and ETH use. Instead of relying on the continuous computation of values and challenge solving, Chia uses a less well know consensus model called “Proof-of-Time-and-Space”.

An abbreviated description of this new consensus model is that secures the network by providing your storage space over a period of time.

That could lead to huge spike in eWaste when compared to the lifespan of an ASIC or GPU. Seems to me like the runtime operation of farming Chia is more energy efficient, the entire process is not without environmental impact.

    This guide allows you to run a harvester on each machine, without having to run a full node, wallet, and farmer on each one. This keeps your system simpler, uses less bandwidth, space, CPU, and also keeps your keys safer. It also makes your overall farm quicker and more efficient when replying to challenges.

    The architecture is composed of one main machine which runs the farmer, full node, and wallet, and other machines which run only the harvester.
    Only your main machine will connect to the Chia network.

    To secure communication between your harvester and main machine, TLS is used where your main machine will be the private Certification Authority (CA) that signs all certificates.

    This command will tell Chia that it should check and verify the validity of your plots.

    This process can take some time, depending on the number of plots on your hard drives.

    For our tutorial, we will be using the Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit beta. However, these steps will work for the Ubuntu server as well but will require some slight tweaks.

    Our first step is to ensure that we have the latest package list and upgrade any out-of-date packages.

    As time goes on, the farming/mining community will likely begin to publish their personal findings.

    SSD and HDD Supply Chain Issues

    As though supply-chain congestion was not already bad enough, one of the last items everyone could readily buy is becoming a delicacy; large capacity HDDs and SSDs. Even for a consumer-grade SSD such as the Samsung 860 SSD this listing on Amazon does not support Prime shipping and has a shipping time of about 2 weeks.

    Introduction

    First it is important to know that there are two very different parts of being a Chia farmer. There is creating the plots or plotting and then there is farming the plots. In this post we are going to focus on the process of creating your plots.

    The types of machines and storage space are very different than the types of hardware you ultimately want to use to farm. You can see some example farming rigs on our very useful repository wiki.

    We initially recommend that you try plotting with what you have around. The only caution about that is that you want to limit the amount of plots you create that use your internal/consumer grade SSD as the temporary space.

    You really never need to plot a plot with a k size larger than 32.

    Don’t put anything in for farmer key or public key, these are for if you are creating plots on a machine that does not have any keys present.

    Select your SSD as the temp directory, and your HDD as the final directory. This is where the plot file gets copied to when it is completed. Make sure you select your plotNFT from the dropdown

    Check that your plotting started and view the log!

    You can also view task manager and make sure the CPU is ramping up.
    On a standard desktop machine with a consumer NVMe you can expect plot time to be between 30 minutes and an hour for each plot. So be patient, and run this with a higher number of plot count and let it run overnight.

    When the plots are done you can see them in Windows explorer.
