For the time being, this virtual Playboy house will contain a variety of gaming, social, and scheduled activities. Moreover, an upcoming non-fungible token (NFT) collectable release is underway.

Iconic Brand Undergoes Transformation

NFT-based Metaverse game platform The Sandbox has linked up with iconic brand Playboy to create the MetaMansion. In the wake of Playboy’s glory days, it’s no wonder that the company has reinvented itself.

Founded in 1953, Playboy has grown to become a major global media empire, with one of the world’s most recognizable trademark logos. Its new partnership with The Sandbox aligns with a broader trend of other legacy brands (such as Gucci and Christie’s Auction House) that have recently been tapping into the burgeoning metaverse as a new source of revenue and customer engagement.

For example, a Playboy SEC filing last year shows the company paid $12 million to purchase a Bombardier Global Express BD-700 so Kohn could unleash that priceless bunny logo across not just the sky, but also on the internet. The plane is an homage to the black-painted DC-9, known as the Big Bunny, flown by Hugh Hefner in the ’70s.

Playboy relaunches in the metaverse

The historic Playboy magazine has announced that it plans toreboot its brand in the digital worldthrough NFTs and beyond. The company also wants to launch its own digital subscriptions and a new villa in the metaverse.

As explained during an interview with CNBC, Playboy wants todrop thousands of avatars in the form of a bunny(the brand’s logo) and create a metaverse to keep up with new technologies.

“The magazine was one product of the company.

It has dabbled in virtual events – including a virtual art gallery – and it dropped its first NFT collection, called Liquid Summer, in spring 2021. Later that same year, the company followed up with the launch of the Playboy Rabbitars (pronounced like ‘avatars’), another branded NFT collection “inspired by Playboy’s most famous iconography, art, photography, celebrities and more,” per the brand’s website.

Rabbitar holders and land owners in The Sandbox “will have access to special experiences” in the MetaMansion, according to Playboy.

“After building momentum in the web3 space through a series of NFT art and collectibles releases, and testing out metaverse events such as virtual art openings and [a] virtual holiday party, creating a virtual home is the next step in building Playboy’s web3 presence and community,” said Rachel Webber, Playboy’s chief brand and strategy officer.

In the context of the metaverse, the Rabbitars are NFTs that live on the Ethereum Blockchain as ERC-721 tokens hosted on IPFS (better known as the InterPlanetary File System—the metaverse’s decentralized file storage system).

As the mythology goes, the Rabbitars are a rare species of rabbit known for their extraordinary speed, cultural sophistication, razor-sharp wit, inimitable intellect, fantastic fashion sense, and in some cases, sexual prowess. Each Rabbitar is generated from 175+ possible traits, including fur, facial features, ears and headwear, apparel, accessories, occupation-related characteristics, and more.

Playboy iconography is woven throughout the collection, and some of the rarest Rabbitars and Rabbitar traits are inspired by significant aspects of Playboy’s art and editorial history.

In addition to launching Centerfold, Playboy’s attempts to get a ton of metaverse money includes launching a massive NFT collection, creating a Discord channel, and hiring a Web3 community manager.

Out of all the Playboy metaverse projects, Centerfold is their biggest one yet. The platform has been able to attract celebrities like Cardi B, Gigi Goode, Amanda Cerny, and Ana Foxxx, which is fairly impressive.

However, Centerfold is still an unproven product, especially when compared to how successful OnlyFans is, but there are high hopes that it will grow into something bigger.
