Participating in the round were new investors including Ava Labs, IDC Ventures, Migration Capital, NTT Data and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank and existing investors Blockchain Ventures, Borderless Capital, Global Brain, Mouro Capital, Ripio, Ripple and SPiCE VC.

Significantly, this was Morgan Stanley’s first investment in a blockchain technology company, providing validation in the space by one of the country’s largest banks and demonstrating that confidence in the adoption and growth of digital asset securities is becoming increasingly mainstream, said co-founder and CEO Carlos Domingo.

Blockchain startup Securitize has raised $48 million in funding during its Series B investment round, co-led by Morgan Stanley.

The Series B round was also led by Blockchain Capital. However, it is significant as Morgan Stanley Tactical Value Investings’ first foray into the blockchain industry. Co-head of the investment arm of the New York-based bank, Pedro Teixeira, will join Securitize’s board.
Despite being the two largest investors, neither company disclosed the size of their stakes.

Securitize intends to launch a platform which will allow investors to buy and sell shares of closely held assets.

Securitize brings together businesses seeking to raise capital with individuals and institutions seeking to invest in the private capital markets through its fully-digital, regulatory compliant, end-to-end blockchain platform for issuing digital asset securities, managing them and facilitating their trading to provide liquidity.

The raise comes before the anticipated launch of Securitize Markets, a marketplace designed for the trading of digital asset securities, providing a path to liquidity for the private capital markets.

The firm also recently launched an asset management subsidiary, Securitize Capital, and two inaugural cryptocurrency yield funds.

Commenting on Morgan Stanley’s first blockchain investment, Teixeira was quoted in the announcement as saying that the investment bank was keen on assets with long-term potential, adding:

“Our investment in Securitize is a sign that we believe in the growth and adoption of digital asset securities.”

Securitize CEO Carlos Domingo also echoed Teixeira’s comments stating that VC funding for the company demonstrates the growing popularity of digital asset securities among legacy finance stakeholders.

As previously reported by Cointelegraph, Morgan Stanley introduced a Bitcoin (BTC) investment product for rich clients back in March.

The Series B round brings Securitize’s total funding to date to $87.5 million, according to Crunchbase.

Domingo said Securitize investors will receive their shares in the form of digital asset securities issued by Securitize. “We will be tokenizing our cap table using our platform so all our existing and new investors will get Securitize IDs and accounts where we will be depositing digital asset securities.”
